Acting Director of Policy and Planning at the Ghana AIDS Commission, John Eliasu Mahama, has elaborated on the transmission rate of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) between the males and females.

Speaking on JoyNews on October 30, 2026, Mahama explained that the Commission’s analysis showed that men are about three times more likely to transmit HIV to women than women are to men.

“Our analysis also shows that if you look at male-to-female transmission compared to female-to-male transmission, males are three times more likely to transmit HIV to women than it is from women to males,” he said.

Mahama noted that women are more likely to visit health facilities than men, making them easier to reach through existing testing programmes.

He said the findings highlighted the need to increase HIV testing among men to help reduce the spread of the virus.

To bridge the gap between the male and women testing ratio, the Commission said it is introducing mobile testing services to reach men at places they frequently visit, including workplaces and markets.

“So, one of the things we are also doing to encourage or to curb this is encouraging male testing,” he said.

“We are coming up with interventions that are mobile and taking the services to workplaces, for example, to marketplaces and to other locations where we can get men to go and also encouraging men to get tested, get to know their HIV status and seek health care services,” he added.

Ghana records 13,951 new HIV infections in 2025

He stressed that early testing is important because it allows people who test positive to know their status and seek the necessary healthcare services.
