The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Volta Region, have launched investigations into the alleged food poisoning that happened at a funeral in Kpando over the weekend.
About 55 mourners were reported to have been hospitalized at the Margaret Marquart Hospital in Kpando, after allegedly eating ‘poisoned’ tilapia at the ceremony.
Initial reports suggested that the tilapia they consumed with banku is believed to have been preserved with the toxic chemical formalin.
But Felix Gefia, Volta Regional Municipal Operation Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has told Joy News there was variety of food served at the funeral, including Waakye, Rice, banku with chicken and fish.
All the victims, but three, have been discharged, according to Mr. Felix Gefia.
In a related development, the birthday boy at the center of last week’s food poisoning saga in Tamale in the Northern Region has been granted bail by the police, after interrogation from the police.
Twelve students of the University of Development Studies were hospitalized after eating pastries at his party on Thursday. He was picked up by the police for questioning on Friday.
Although all the students have been discharged, the Tamale Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Alhaji Mahama Arhin says the police are yet to send sample of the food to the FDA for investigations.
