The Dental Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has been shut down due to a strike declared by some workers at the unit.

The workers are demanding a premium on their salaries and conditions of service. The transport section of the hospital has also been abandoned by drivers who are seeking similar benefits. All vehicles belonging to the clinic had been parked.

Nurses and other workers within the clinic space have all stopped working. The clinic, which operates under the University of Ghana, serves patients from Ghana and parts of the West African sub-region.

The shutdown, according to TV3’s Labour Correspondent, Daniel Opoku, has started taking a toll on patients. Students who are supposed to be conveyed from various places to the medical school for lectures have also been affected. This means the students would have to transport themselves to the campus.

According to Daniel Opoku, there had been a meeting between management of the University of Ghana and the leadership of the Tertiary Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) over the incident.

The meeting however ended inconclusively. The leadership of the striking workers say until a reasonable agreement is reached and the premiums hitting their accounts, the strike continues unabated. Management of the Dental Clinic is yet to comment on the development.
