Delta Airlines in partnership with the Ghana Red Cross Society has distributed free long lasting treated insecticide nets to residents of Nima and Mamobi, suburbs of Accra.
The project is part of the organization's 'Hang Up and Keep Up' malaria prevention campaign, which was launched last year.
Mrs Petra Asamoah, the General Manager in charge of general sales agency at Delta Airlines, Ghana, said the distribution of the treated nets is mainly targeted at women and children below the age of five.
She said the mortality rate of children below the age of five, in relation to malaria is still high, hence the need to continue the project.
"Delta has been proud to support the work of the Ghana Red Cross Society, as it targets the vulnerable with the treated nets with accompanying malaria prevention messages, to help reduce the rates of malaria infection and infant mortality in the country," she said.
She said as a leading airline, the company is committed to giving something back to the communities it serves around the world, including Ghana.
Hajia Mariam Salifu, the Acting Regional Facilitator of the Mother's Club, a wing of the Red Cross Society. Ghana, commended Delta Airlines for the support.
She said the project, which was launched last year, has helped in reducing malaria infection in the Nima-Mamobi community.
She said the Club would continue to educate the people on how to use the treated nets and the need to keep their environment clean, as a way of helping to prevent the malaria infection.
