A nine-year-old class two pupil who was a hermaphrodite at birth has undergone surgery at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and has now been proven a female child.

The class two pupil name withheld attends Akwatia Roman Catholic Primary School in the Denkyembour district of the Eastern Region and also has deformity on the left leg and wears prosthesis, which needs to be changed every two years.

Madam Philomena Asantewaa Agyei the founder of Good Shepherd Development Outreach, an orphanage home in Akwatia told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the health condition of the physically challenged said, the child was brought to the home by some group of individuals claiming the child was dumped by the riverside by unknown persons with the explanation that, it was fearful enough to stay with hermaphrodite in the house.

Madam Asantewaa Agyei said, with the support from well-meaning individuals in the area, the hermaphrodite underwent a surgery and was proven a female child.

A hermaphrodite is a person who has both male and female sex organs.

"Doctors have also detected a kidney problem on the girl and she is to report in September this year, for a check up on what actually the problem is", Madam Asantewaa Agyei added.

She appealed to all and sundry to come to the aid of the girl, whether in cash or in kind to enable her have the needed medical attention.
