More than 600 pupils from five schools in the Okaikoi Central sub-metro have been schooled on menstrual hygiene management.
Founder of Inspire to Rise Wendy Laryea believes commemorating the day is critical in demystifying myths surrounding menstruation.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is globally observed annually to promote personal hygiene among females as well as raise awareness and demystify taboos associated with menstruation.
In Ghana, Inspire to Rise, a not-for-profit organization, commemorated the Day at Apenkwa in the OkaiKoi Central Sub Metro with pupils from five public schools.
The gender-inclusive programme was facilitated by Ms Laryea, who is also a news anchor at TV3 and Unicef Ghana’s Menstrual Hygiene Influencer.
The interactive session schooled pupils on menstruation and implications of premarital sex.
She said menstruation is a common characteristic of every adolescent girl and so girls in their period must be offered the needed support.
A medical doctor at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of Lekma Hospital, Dr. Elvis Kuma Forson, spoke about measures females can adopt during their menstruation.
The pupils indicated the session was educative.
Sanitary pads were also distributed to some female pupils present but stakeholders are pushing for a sustainable government policy to distribute free sanitary pads to pupils across the country.
Earlier, the team also had a Menstrual Hygiene Management session with The Apostolic Church, Ghana- La Central District.
This year’s commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day was on the theme ‘It’s Time For Action’.
