A grand durbar to climax the month-long Breast Cancer Awareness Creation has been held at Obuasi over the weekend.

Speaking at the function, the Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr. Kwasi Amankwah said the town recorded forty-five breast cancer cases in the last two years. He was of the view that increased awareness and screening could detect even more cases.

“We should fully and willingly offer our breasts for screening at any credible health facility for early detection and better treatment outcome,” Dr. Amankwah added.

The Obuasi East District Chief Executive, Madam Faustina Amissah, said early diagnosis remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control.

She noted that when found early and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured.

The Senior Manager Sustainability, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo expressed the company’s commitment to continue to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the people of Obuasi under its Sustainable Development Strategy.

“This commitment is clearly spelt out in a Social Management Plan developed to serve as AngloGold Ashanti’s road map to help diversify the economy of Obuasi through a shared value approach”, he stated.

The Executive Director of AGA Health Foundation, Mr. Richard Paakwesi Cromwell, noted that throughout the period of the awareness creation, health professionals screened 1,794 people at the various workplaces visited.

He stated that 64 males out of the number were screened while 106 of those screened had findings that warranted further investigation.

The Adansihemaa, Nana Amoanimaa Dede II, who chaired the function, expressed her profound gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti and AGA Health Foundation in particular for the awareness creation and the durbar.

She was hopeful that more women in the traditional area will take advantage of the awareness exercise to get screened.
