Accra, July 26, GNA - Accra Heart of Oak Sporting Club was crowned champions of the 2008/9 Glo Premier League at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra on Sunday.
This was at a well attended and special ceremony planned by the Premier League Board (PLB) to crown the winners of the premiership. Captain Hassan Mohamed of Hearts was presented with the League trophy by acting Minister of Youth and Sports, Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo ably supported by Kwesi Nyantakyi, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as well as Welbeck Yaw Abra-Appiah, Chairman of the Premier League Board (PLB) and Worlanyo Agrah, acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council.
Players and officials of Hearts were also presented with a medal each and a cash prize of GHC 10,000.
A coronation match between local rivals Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics however ended in a deadlock.
The match which was a 60 minute game with many expecting the revival of rivalry between the two sides however failed to meet the expectations, with the two sides creating some few scoring chances. Playing with their regular side, Hearts had the first scoring opportunity which fell on the path of Eric Gawu in the sixth minute with Kwesi Bonsu also presented with a perfect opportunity but his header went over the bar a minute later.
A misdirected kick from Samuel Affum in the 14th minute could have earned Hearts the lead but the effort went off target with only keeper Ben Mensah to beat in post for Olympics.
With the exception of the three clear cut chances, the rest of the first half and greater parts of the second half was limited to a pure midfield action till the 60th minute when Olympics Isaac Bortey broke loose in the Hearts defence and had only keeper Philemon McCarthy to beat but the striker surprisingly directed his shot at the side post. After the final whistle there was wild jubilations amongst the Hearts faithful followers, clad in the Clubs colours singing and dancing far into the evening. 26 July 09
