Liberty earn season's first win

Accra, Oct. 26, GNA - Liberty Professionals earned their first win of the season when they beat Bechem Chelsea by a lone goal on Sunday at the Carl Reindorf Park, Dansoman.

Midfielder Kamal Issah scored the only goal of the week three of the Glo Premier League encounter on 39 minutes to hand Liberty their first three points of the 2009/2010 soccer season.

Liberty, one of the two sides to have played a game less in the three-week old premiership started off lowly as they failed to string their passes together allowing the visitors to dominate ball possession. Chelsea displayed an output which made Liberty appear as the visitors in their own backyard with right-back Eric Agyemang leading several onslaughts into the hosts' half.

Agyemang was by far the brightest spot in the first half with his characteristic surges on the flanks whilst Liberty struggled in search of their rhythm.

Despite the dominance in possession, it was Liberty who appeared more purposeful in front of goal with the speed of a pacy striker Latif Salifu making the difference.

Salifu, a member of the Black Satellites gold winning squad at the recently ended FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, remained a constant threat to the Chelsea rear, made up of Lee Addy, Yahaya Mohammed and Jackson Owusu, and was a victim of rough play from his markers. Seven minutes past the half-hour mark, Salifu was fouled by Mohammed at the edge of the penalty area for a free-kick.

Black Satellites midfielder Ghandy Kassenu set up Issah from the resultant free-kick, which the latter blasted past the human wall for the only goal of the match.

The second half was a balanced game with Liberty slightly on top. However their quest for more goals remained a dream as Chelsea's captain Addy thwarted the efforts of tormentor-in-chief Salifu. On 88 minutes, Chelsea were gifted with a golden opportunity to draw equal after Danjumah Jafaru was put through by substitute Nana Eshun, but Jafaru surprisingly shot wide from a spot easier to score than miss. Liberty striker Salifu was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.

Meanwhile, Liberty will host new entrants New Edubiase United in their outstanding week one clash on Wednesday, October 28 at the same venue. The opener was rescheduled due to the Dansoman-based Club's engagement in the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Club Championship.
