Referee rushed to hospital as Kessben-Chelsea game ends abruptly

An injury sustained by referee Sellas Okine of Accra as a result of missile thrown from a suspected Kesben FC fan abruptly ended the Glo Ghana premier League match between the Kessben hosts and Bechem Chelsea. The referee had to be rushed by ambulance to hospital after a fan wearing the white and blue colours of Kessben threw a missile at him as he was entering the tunnel that leads to the dressing room at half time.

Referee Okine was immediately rushed to hospital and the match was called off. Now it remains a big decision for the GFA’s disciplinary committee to make on where the points will go and who will be punished.

But this writer and many present at the match believe the management of Kessben instigated their fans against the referee. It was the general perception across the Anane Boateng Stadium that referee Okine was not officiating the match in their favour.

The fans therefore started hurling insults and boos at the referee for every decision taken. It got worse when referee Okine was struck by a missile thrown by a fan wearing the blue and white replica shirt of Kessben FC. The referee was badly hit and consequently driven by ambulance to the hospital and the match brought to an abrupt end.

“The idea that a referee should by hook or crook help a team to win home matches is killing Ghana football. I hope the GFA takes a cue from the English FA and punish Kessben accordingly,” an eyewitness at the match told this reporter.
