The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has emphasised the importance of a peaceful electoral process in the country.

According to him, elections should allow citizens to freely express their will without fear, violence, or intimidation.

Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV on Monday, December 4, 2024, he appealed for an election free from violence and misconduct, citing past incidents such as the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, where allegations of violence and intimidation marred the process.

He also pointed out isolated incidents of violence during the 2020 elections and urged authorities to prevent a recurrence.

"All we are hoping for is a peaceful election and for the will of Ghanaians to prevail. We don't want to hear about irregularities and fraud during the electoral process. We don't want what happened during the Ayawaso by-election to repeat itself. We do not want to see armed men perpetrating violence at polling stations.

"In 2020, there were pockets of violence all over. What we are saying is that elections are about counting heads and not cutting heads," he noted.

Sammy Gyamfi reminded Ghanaians of the country's history of peaceful transitions, noting how former presidents like Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Atta Mills, John Mahama, and Nana Akufo-Addo respected the people's mandate.

He indicated that the government should be willing to accept the people's verdict, whether it reflects satisfaction or dissatisfaction with its performance.

"If the Akufo-Addo-led government thinks it has done a good job, the people of Ghana should decide if they will allow them to stay in power. In the same way, if Ghanaians feel they are dissatisfied with them, they will vote them out.

"Since 2000, Ghana has had peaceful transitions. Rawlings handed over power to Kufuor, who handed over to Atta Mills. Atta Mills handed over to Mahama, and then Mahama to Akufo-Addo," he added.
