A Research Associate for the African Leadership Centre, Dr. Kafui Tsekpo, has cautioned the Electoral Commission to be sensitive to the nation's security as the country approaches the elections.

Speaking exclusively on GhanaWeb TV’s Election Desk with Mawuli Ahorlumegah, Dr. Tsekpo emphasised the Electoral Commission's critical role in ensuring a peaceful election.

He stressed that any misstep by the EC could jeopardise the country's stability and therefore cautioned them to make key decisions that are in the best interest of the nation.

“It is important that electoral management institution, the Electoral Commission and its assigns are sensitive to the national security of this country by ensuring that whatever processes and actions and decisions they are taking is in the paramount interest of the country and no individual,” he said.

Dr. Tsekpo believes that the EC, as an institution, must build public confidence and trust by assuring Ghanaians of the credibility and authenticity of their electoral systems.

He explained that the EC has introduced several electronic systems over the years, which could be manipulated by dubious individuals. Therefore, the onus lies on the EC to assure Ghanaian voters of the credibility and authenticity of their systems, and to eliminate any doubts after the elections.

According to him, this approach could prevent chaotic situations and mistrust among the public when the results are collated and the winner is announced.

“We have gotten to a stage where we have introduced a number of electronic processes which we all know are not fool proof. They are subject to manipulation which can happen at different stages of the process.”

He added, “It is very important for the EC to assure the general public, the voting public, and the contestants in the election that whatever system they are putting in place is safe, can be authenticated, audited, and can guarantee a smooth transition of voter result and an accurate collation of result to determine the true winner of the general elections.”
