31st December Women’s Movement

The Office of the 31st December Women’s Movement has taken note of a series of media reports by certain members of the Movement denouncing the candidature of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, President of the Movement and a candidate in the forthcoming congress of the NDC.

We have closely monitored these media events and have come to a conclusion these are state sponsored machinations to cause dissatisfaction among our membership. The Movement wants to state categorically that our membership across the length and breadth of Ghana is in total support of Nana Konadu. We have always stood by our President and we will again stand by her in her bid for the NDC flag-bearership. The Movement is extremely united and firmly behind H.E Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. There has not been any disagreement whatsoever from any member with regards to the Presidential ambitions of the President of our Movement and we would like to state categorically that any statements by any individuals to the contrary do not represent the views of the Movement. We would also like to state officially that our former Deputy General Secretary Mrs Kumah Mintah, in her resignation letter dated 3rd May 2011 stated:

“Family pressures arising out of my mother’s incapacitation coupled with other issues have necessitated this painful decision of mine.

I wish to render my sincerest appreciation to you personally and all members of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

I wish to state that though resigned, I will avail myself of any assignment you may refer to me and time permitting, I shall oblige you and act accordingly”

We were therefore extremely surprised, shocked and disappointed to learn that in a radio interview she was insincere when stating the reason for her resignation.

Owing to the large and very capable membership of the Movement, we would like to assure the general public that her resignation has had no impact on our ongoing women’s empowerment activities.

It is well known to the majority of Ghanai ans that the Movement has been an important platform and mentoring ground for many women who have become major players in industry, media, politics and other sectors of the economy. We will continue to do so and promise Ghanaians that our mission statement of women’s empowerment for the development of the nation will carry on unabated. The National Democratic Congress was built on principles of probity, accountability and obviously democracy. Principles that Nana Konadu has applied in the successful leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement for 29 years and principles that she will apply in the successful leadership of our beloved nation. We are solidly behind Nana Konadu in her bid for Presidency and will continue to offer her all the necessary support that we deem necessary to her campaign.
