The race for who wins the 2020 election is on as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to battle the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But as usual, the governing party has the advantage as it has the ability to get things right before Ghanaians go to the polls.

As it stands, the NPP is in this position and unless they screw things up, there is no reason why they should not retain power in 2020.

The Nana Addo government has already achieved some of its campaign promises but there are a lot more that can, and should, be done.

Here are five easy ways NPP can win 2020 election hands down:

1. Payback all Menzgold customers

This is definitely a tough ask, but the Menzgold saga has affected a lot of Ghanaians and paying the customers back would be endearing.

Already, some customers are blaming the government for allowing the gold dealership firm to operate when it knew things were not right.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s declaration that the government will not give a dime to persons who lost their investments did not also go down too well.

Paying Menzgold customers their monies is a huge challenge for any government, but it is also a leeway to acquire some votes.

2. Fix the Cedi depreciation against the Dollar

Another important issue that the NPP government need to tackle in order to retain power is the depreciation of the cedi.

Currently, the local currency is selling at over ¢5.00 per the United States (US) dollar and this is definitely not good for businesses.

The country’s economy came under scrutiny following complaints by a section of the public on the fast depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar.

Fixing the depreciation of the cedi will be a huge political statement ahead of the 2020 general elections.

3. Ensure Ghanaians are safe (security)

For the past two years, security in Ghana has been fragile and that is a huge concern for all citizens.

In fact, the government seems lost in finding a solution to the volatile security issues across the country.

This has culminated in mass murders, unsolved armed robbery cases and the recent high cases of kidnappings recorded.

The Nana Addo government must find modern ways of transforming the Ghana Police Service to be able to fight crime. This will be key going into 2020.

4. Walk the talk of stopping and reducing corruption to the barest minimum in government since 2017

Another low for the NPP government so far has been its inability to wholeheartedly fight corruption.

President Akufo-Addo must make sure that persons who engage in corruption are not only investigated but also prosecuted.

What we see currently is just the normal talk, but no serious action is being taken to reduce corruption in the system.

Should the Nana Addo government begin to walk the talk, it will give Ghanaians more reasons to retain the NPP in 2020.

5. Call Kennedy Agyapong to order

As controversial as this may sound, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, is making the NPP government unpopular with his utterances.

The maverick lawmaker is almost always involved in one controversy or the other and that is not what the NPP needs with just over a year to the 2020 elections.

If the president and his government are able to ’shut Kennedy Agyapong up', it just may increase their chances in the 2020 elections.
