Former General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to sack Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong from her position as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
Many people including political pressure group, the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) are calling for the resignation of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice after the acquittal and discharge of Businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome on the trial of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretense.
The opposition NPP, at a press conference on Tuesday, stated that the prosecution put by the Attorney General in Woyome’s trial was shoddy as government officials connived with Woyome to dupe the country of Gh¢51 million.
Sharing his thoughts on the issue, Sir John stated on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show that there is a bond of appreciation between President Mahama and the law firm the current A-G, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong formerly worked with.
His reason, that Marietta Brew’s partner Tony Lithur defended the President during the landmark 2012 Presidential Election Petition at the Supreme Court; alleging that the current A-G was nominated for the position after Tony Lithur rejected the offer.
“The position was first given to Tony Lithur and he rejected it...thereafter he recommended his partner Madam Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong...It is President Mahama's way of saying thank you to the law firm. We are saying it is a show of appreciation from President Mahama to Tony Lithur's former law firm for helping him to secure his mandate as President of Ghana,” he alleged.
Sir John however, entreated the Attorney General to resign honorably since she sinks deep in the GH¢51 million judgment debt scandal after her firm connived with Austro-Invest to pay $1 million dollars to a non-existing company knowing very well the act was fraudulent.
He further asserted that the Attorney General deliberately omitted the Supreme Court declarations that affected Austro-Invest and the then Attorney General, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, whose conduct in facilitating the payment of the over Ghc51million to Alfred Agbesi Woyome were also declared unconstitutional when she filed the entry of judgment in the case.
