Abetifi elects parliamentary candidate for Election 2004

Kwahu-Tafo, Sept 13, GNA - Nana Adi Ankamah, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said the leadership of the party was taking lessons from the disputes in the on-going primaries and would seek amendment to the constitution at the next delegates' conference to bring sanity into the system.

He was speaking at the Abetifi constituency primary of the party at Kwahu-Tafo on Saturday at which the incumbent MP, Mr Eugene Atta Agyapong, was re-elected to contest the parliamentary seat. He was elected by popular acclamation by all the 104 delegates since he was the only candidate who had filed his nomination. Nana Adi Ankamah refuted allegations that the party was distributing rice and money to people to influence them to vote for the NPP during Election 2004.

He appealed to the electorate to reflect on the "solid economic foundation" that the Kufuor administration had lain and to vote for the NPP to move the country forward.

Mr Hackman Owusu Agyeman, the Minister of Interior, advised supporters of the party to burry their differences and to support all the parliamentary candidates and the leadership of the party to ensure a resounding victory for the party in the elections.

He said Mr Agyapong, who is the Chairman of the Finance Committee in Parliament, had played a major role in the country's economic planning process and should be voted back to parliament to continue with his good work.

The minister appealed to party supporters in the constituency to unite and avoid infighting to prevent the NDC from taking advantage to win more seats.

Mr Atta Agyapong thanked the delegates and assured them that he would work hard when elected into parliament to enhance the country's economic development.
