Polling station executives of the New Patriotic Party in the Ablekuma West constituency have accused the party’s hierarchy of scheming in favour of incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, ahead of Saturday’s primaries.
This follows a meeting held last week by the National Executive Council (NEC), allowing two registers to be used in the 9 April primaries.
The delegates in the constituency believe the move is an orchestration in favour of the incumbent MP. They have, therefore, promised to prevent any election from taking place with what they describe as an illegal register, which they claim has been compiled by Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
In an interview with Class News’ Ekow Annan, Jones Atuahene, the leader of the delegates said two albums can never be used for the polls.
“We are agitating because our NEC wants to slap us with an album, which is alien to us. Two albums are never used for any election. We don’t know where the second album is coming from, but they have approved that the sitting MP should add her own album. The authentic and legitimate album with the constituency is the album used for electing constituency executives, same album was used to elect regional executives, national [executives] and the flagbearer. The album was challenged in court and was struck out, so, why now? Why are they taking decisions that will affect the party?” he questioned.
This assertion was corroborated by one of the parliamentary aspirants, Theophilus Tetteh who hinted at a court action if the decision is not reversed by the party.
“We don’t know why the party will not restrict [itself] to the decision taken by the court, but rather [come up] with a strange decision. A decision where a parliamentary aspirant will be asked to go and prepare her own album to come and contest, this is not justice and this is not NPP. We will use all legal means to prevent the elections from taking place,” he stated.
Meanwhile the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, Ishmael Ashitey has said the election will go ahead with the two registers.
“The two albums will be used for the elections, which have been set for April 9 by the NEC. It is a very high body that has taken the decision and I don’t stand a chance contesting that decision,” he indicated.
