Madam Susana Adu Amankwa, Second National Vice Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has called on women to continue to advocate for a comprehensive Affirmative Action law with gender equality components.
“Men and women alike continue to think of politics as a male domain because the empirical truth at the moment is that politics is a male domain, a boys club; increased women participation will effect powerful changes in politics," she said.
Madam Adu Amankwa made the call at a seminar in Accra on the theme: “Impact of 24th February on the Empowerment of Women and Women’s Organisations”.
She said stereotyping women as only good for motherhood and as care givers must be stopped adding that political parties should celebrate outstanding female members of their parties openly to encourage other women to join.
She said the CPP was encouraging all credible female members to run as parliamentary candidates and was also head hunting a lot of upwardly young women to be candidates.
“We, therefore, strongly support an Affirmative Action law,’’ she said.
She called on political parties to back the Public Funding of Political Parties Bill and brainstorm with civil society on how best to educate the public on the bill which also provides for the funding of women candidates.
