Accra, Sept.21, GNA - Mr George Opersika Aggudey, a Businessman on Sunday morning won the overwhelming approval of the second National Delegates' Congress of the Convention People's Party (CPP) held in Accra, to become the Presidential candidate of the leftist party for the 2004 General Election.
Mr Aggudey, the Chief Executive of Go Crest Security, a private security firm, obtained 1,216 votes from the 1,800 delegates at the congress to beat Alhaji Ibrahim Mahama, a Veteran Politician and a Tamale-based Legal Practitioner, who trailed with 461 votes. Dr Edmund Nminyem Delle, a Dermatologist (Skin Specialist), polled 1,008 votes for the position of a National Chairman, beating Mr Iddi Egala, a Chartered Accountant, who ran a very active campaign, to the second place with 394 votes, while Mr Felix Amoah, an Electrical Engineer came third with 272 votes.
Mrs Araaba Bentsi-Enchil Svenson, a Political Scientist, and the only female contestant in the national executive polls polled a surprised victory over seasoned politicians to become the First National Vice-Chairman with 635 votes.
Mr Mike Eghan, a Veteran Broadcaster, was elected the Second National Vice-Chairman with 396 votes whilst Mr Johnny Hanson another Veteran Politician, became the Third Vice-Chairman with 240 votes. Professor Nii Noi Dowuona also retained his position as General Secretary with a wide margin of 1,156 to beat two contestants - Mr Kwasi Baidoo, 445 votes and Mr Ganiyi Akanni Balogun, 85 votes.
Mr Martin Donkor retained his position as National Treasurer by beating Mr Ekow Duncan, Management Consultant with 1,219 votes against 465.
Mr Aggudey, whose victory coincided with the 94th birthday of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's Premier President and Founder of CPP, promised to bring a new leadership style to bear to rejuvenate the once buoyant party.
He told the cheering supporters that: "CPP is under a new management and will be competitive to let other parties to bow out."
Mr Aggudey, who lost the slot to Professor George Hagan for the 2000 Presidential Elections, urged supporters to revive the proverbial organisational skills of the CPP by being active in their constituencies to ensure the victory of the party in 2004.
Mrs Enchil Svenson gave the assurance that she would not let the party down in its expectations for CPP's electoral victory. Alhaji Mahama, who was not available for comments, has been waging a sustainable campaign since 1992 to lead a re-organised Nkrumahist front.
He contested for the presidential slot of the erstwhile People's Heritage Party in 1992; the People's Convention Party in 1996 and the Convention Party that later transformed to CPP in 2000 but lost on all the occasions and ended up becoming the running mates of the winning candidates.
