Agona DCE files nomination papers

Agona Swedru (C/R), Oct. 22, GNA - Nine candidates contesting the Agona West and East Parliamentary Seats in the December 2004 elections filed their nomination papers on Wednesday and Thursday at Agona Swedru and Nsaba in the Central Region.

Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, District Chief Executive for Agona and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Agona East was the first to file his nomination papers at Nsaba on Wednesday.

Mr A. K.Turkson, Returning Officer for Agona East and other officials of the Electoral Commission, received his nomination papers at Nsaba Presbyterian Secondary School Library.

Mr Kwame Nkrumah of the People's National Convention (PNC) was the next to submit his papers.

On Thursday, Mr Samuel Kweku Adu-Yeboah, MP for Agona East filed his nomination on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while Mr Theophilus Maranga submitted his papers to contest the elections as an Independent.

At Agona Swedru on Wednesday, the Reverend Joseph Archibald Ankrah of the Abiding Faith Church International; was the first to file his nomination to contest the Agona West Seat on the ticket of People's National Convention (PNC).

Mr Samuel Kweku Obodai, MP for the Constituency, also filed his papers as the NPP candidate.

Mr Joseph Kwabina Otsibu-Amoah, a 60-year-old Telecommunication Technician filed his papers on Thursday as the candidate of the Convention People's Party (CPP) while Mr Samuel Oppong, a Former MP and Mr Paul Kofi Tawiah, filed their papers to contest on the ticket of NDC and as an Independent candidate, respectively.

Mr Serebour Quaicoe, District Electoral Officer, speaking to the GNA after the exercise, said the contestants should not expect to be placed on the ballot papers according to the time and order of the submission of their nomination forms.

He said that the Commission had received a writ filed by Mr Daniel Anokye-Essel, from Agona Kwanyako at the Cape Coast High Court to restrain the EC from receiving the nomination papers of Mr Theophilus Maranga to contest as an Independent.

Mr Quaicoe explained that the EC as an independent body had no interest in the case between Mr Adu-Yeboah and Mr Maranga, who were both members of the NDC.

The District Electoral Officer stated that if Mr Adu-Yeboah had any problem with Mr Maranga, the MP should file a writ against his party member, who is contesting Agona East Seat with him as an Independent and not the Commission.
