A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asamoah Gyamfi, has sternly admonished the acclaimed youth wing of the party to desist from canvassing support for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to go unopposed as such calls cast a slur on the image of the two-time presidential candidate of the party.

A group claiming to represent the Greater Accra Youth Wing of the NPP, last week, demanded that the party should not field any candidate apart from the 2012 presidential candidate for Election 2016, and further called for the withdrawal of all competitors for the party’s presidential primary scheduled for December.

But Asamoah Gyamfi opines it is against the constitution of the party since the NPP has rules and regulations guiding its operations in the election of a Flagbearer.

Speaking on the afternoon political program on Okay Fm dubbed “Ghana Decides," the NPP communicator backed comments by Nana Ohene Ntow, Spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen that the idea of calling for a particular candidate to run unopposed will amount to throwing away the constitution and the foundation of the NPP.

He stressed that the action of the youth has disrespected the position of Nana Akufo Addo as he had earlier disassociated himself from any support calling for him to run unopposed, adding the press conference portrays that Nana Addo is afraid of a contest.

“I didn't understand the stance of the youth wing because Nana Addo himself has said he wants the contest….they should have respected the position of Nana Addo and not hold a press conference to state the popularity of Nana Addo as a measure for him to go unopposed. I don’t think people know NPP because of Nana Addo; NPP is bigger than Nana Addo. I believe Nana Addo understands that NPP is bigger than him….if Nana Addo doubts this, he should leave the party and see if he will garner any followers. What I will tell the supporters of Nana Addo is to go to the polling stations to support Nana Addo. What the youth are doing will portray that Nana Addo is afraid of a contest….there will be more confusion if we don’t open the Flagbearership race; we have to follow the tradition of the party, and it shouldn't be on popularity in the party,” he posited.
