General Secretary of the opposition NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has claimed Nana Akufo-Addo rejected the advice of elderly counsel to concede defeat after the 2012 General Elections.
His comments follow the Asantehene’s address at the UN where he said his palace persuaded the losing candidate [Mahama] in the 2016 elections to accept defeat.
But the NDC disagrees. A statement signed by former Chief of Staff said the former President accepted defeat on his own.
This has meanwhile generated a lot of controversies.
Reacting to this Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said "whatever the raw materials that went into the decision it remains that President Mahama conceded defeat . . ." he stated.
He criticized the fact that the NPP are being mischievous with this debate and urged his party Communicators to refrain from debating them (NPP).
He spoke in an interview with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Neat FM's 'Me Man Nti' program.
Response from Mahama’s office
A former Chief of Staff under the Mahama-administration has however refuted the Asantehene’s claims.
“As former Chief of Staff to President Mahama, I was associated closely with all the pre, during and post 2016 poll events. I state without equivocation that the decision to concede and congratulate Nana Akufo-Addo even before the official results were declared was taken by President Mahama himself without any persuasion from any quarter,” a statement from the office of Mahama said.
