Appiah-Menkah calls for support for constitutional review

Kuntanase (Ash), May 13, GNA - Mr Akenten Appiah-Menkah, a lawyer, entrepreneur and politician, has rallied support for the constitutional review process, telling the people that it represented good housekeeping for the nation.

"It is meant to fashion out home grown solutions to the nation's governance problems."

He said this in an address read for him at the on-going community and district level consultations at Kuntanase and Feyiase in the Bosomtwe District.

Mr Appiah-Menkah, who is a member of the Constitutional Review Commission, said although Ghana is making strides on the roadmap to constitutionalism, there should not be any doubt that there are still too many challenges to its governance progress.

He therefore appealed to every Ghanaian including those abroad to let their views be heard on changes they would want to be made to the Constitution.

Mr Appiah-Menkah said all needed to show keen interest and get actively involved in the review process. He said the Commission was of the firm belief that a key part of the review process was "its ownership by the

people of Ghana." "The bottom line for us is that our recommendations must collectively enhance the unity and cohesion of our

nation." Mr Ernest Owusu-Dapaah, Counsel to the Commission, appealed to all Ghanaians to see the exercise as crucial

to the growth of the nation's democracy. Nana Osei Kufour, Chief of Feyiase, said the constitutional provision barring chiefs from partisan politics

should be maintained. This, he said, was necessary to preserve the dignity of the chieftaincy institution and its unifying factor.
