Ashaiman NPP advises NDC leadership

Tema, Nov. 24, GNA - The Ashaiman constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the leadership of the National Democratic Party (NDC) to advise their members to be law abiding to ensure peace during and after the elections in the constituency.

The NPP executives of the constituency said, though it has decided not to react to confrontations by the main opposition party, it would not tolerate such acts when repeated.

The warning was issued in a press release signed by its constituency secretary, Mr Joseph Ofosu Siaw to the Ghana News Agency, alleging that, some members of the NDC at Ashaiman vandalised its (NPP) campaign van, while having a rally at the Mandela Park.

It said on November 20, 2004, while holding the rally, the driver of the van with registration number AS 3372 T was on an errand through the main road near the park.

The release stated that, the NDC members on seeing the van in a traffic attacked it, spoiling the horn speakers, side glasses, and assaulted the driver as well as the occupants of the van. It said the incident was reported to the police but was later withdrawn "since we believe we are not enemies but partners with a common goal to develop Ghana".

The release called on both Professor John Evans Atta Mills and Mr Alfred Agbesi, the presidential and parliamentary candidates respectively of the NDC in the constituency to restrain their members from indulging in such incidents.

It also cautioned the attackers that they would not entertain such acts next around time, "our decision to close the case does not mean that we are weak and cannot protect or defend ourselves". Meanwhile, in reaction to the allegation, Lawyer Alfred Agbesi has denied the allegation, arguing that, his members could never indulge in such acts.

"If there was any mob action, then it could be a different group of people and not NDC members", he stated, and asked why the NPP has decided to come out so late after the incident.
