The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has complained of intimidation and violent attacks on its party agents deployed to observe the biometric voters’ registration.
Mr Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the NDC Regional chairman, said the party's agents were chased out of some registration centres in the Suame Constituency for daring to challenge the eligibility of some minors. He mentioned the Bremang Royal Casbar, Maakro Presby and the Kwontwima Saint Dominic R/C centers.
Mr Obimpeh also cited that the party’s parliamentary aspirant for Ejisu-Juaben was attacked at Juaben while touring the centres to assess progress of the exercise. The NDC Regional chairman, who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi that a formal report had been made to the police, said the development was unhealthy, but he was not frightened.
This comes on the second day of the nation-wide exercise to compile a voters’ registration register to replace the existing one.
The NDC agents, Gabriel Aklamanu, Richard Oduro and Miss Georgina Akoto, claimed their troubles started on the first day of the exercise, when they asked for challenge forms to dispute the qualification of some under-aged applicants. “We were insulted and threatened. Matters worsened on Sunday when we were physically assaulted.”
