Ashanti Region deserves more attention from the NPP - Kwabena Agyapong

In a conversation on Election Field at Oyerepa TV, Kwabena Agyapong, a leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, addressed his past disagreements with former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Agyapong reflected on the developmental strategies during Kufuor’s administration, particularly how initiatives in the Volta Region often overshadowed the urgent needs of the Ashanti Region, a crucial political stronghold for the NPP.

Speaking openly about the issue, Agyapong expressed concern that Kufuor’s broader national vision inadvertently overlooked the significant contributions and needs of the Ashanti Region.

“During Kufuor’s time, there was a national perspective on development, and while that’s important, it seemed the Ashanti Region was not given the attention it deserved,” Agyapong explained.

“As a party, we rely heavily on the support of the Ashanti people, but for many years, we neglected to invest in the region’s infrastructure and social programs.”

The Ashanti Region, which has historically been a pillar of support for the NPP, has often been left grappling with issues such as underdeveloped infrastructure and limited social services despite its consistent role in securing electoral victories for the party.

Agyapong’s comments reflect a growing frustration among some NPP members who believe that the region’s contribution is not sufficiently recognised in terms of development.

Agyapong went on to acknowledge the stark reality faced by residents of the Ashanti Region, stressing that this oversight has long-term consequences on the region’s ability to fully thrive.

“The people of the Ashanti Region have always been loyal to the party, but they have not always received the resources they deserve in return,” he said. “These are people who have consistently supported the NPP, yet we have not prioritised their needs.”

He further explained that a more targeted approach to infrastructure development in the Ashanti Region could benefit not only the locals but also the region’s cosmopolitan nature.

“Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, is a hub for many foreigners who have made it their home. If we improve infrastructure and social programs here, it will benefit not just the Ashanti people but also the diverse populations who live and work in the region,” Agyapong said.

For Agyapong, it is not just about addressing the region’s needs for the benefit of electoral success; it’s about ensuring that the region remains competitive and sustainable in the long run.

“The Ashanti Region is critical to the NPP, and it’s time we give it the attention and resources it truly deserves. This is not just a political move, but a necessary step to ensure that the region continues to thrive as the heartbeat of Ghana,” he concluded.
