Aspiring parliamentary candidates wishing to contest for seats already occupied by sitting New patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament are expected pay 11 million cedis for nomination forms and contesting fee.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Mr Dan Botwe, who announced this to journalists at Abiriw-Akuapem on Saturday, said the nomination period would be between April 8 to 22.
He said the cost of a form is one million cedis while the contesting fee is 10 million cedis.
Reacting to comments by critics that the fee was too high, Mr Botwe explained that it was considered that " the seats are safe and also because the party needs funds for its electioneering campaign." Mr Botwe dismissed allegations that it was a policy designed to discourage aspirants from contesting with the sitting MPs and said the party's decision would affect both the MPs and aspirants.
However, contesting fee for areas where there are no sitting MPs is 5 million cedis.
