Awudu Ishaq, the National Communications Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), has officially entered the race for the position of General Secretary of the party as the party opens nominations.
On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, a group of Ishaq's close friends and family members, acting with his consent, picked up nomination forms on his behalf at the PNC Headquarters in Accra.
This marks the beginning of what promises to be a decisive campaign for the General Secretaryship, as Mr. Ishaq seeks to bring his extensive experience and proven leadership to the forefront of the party's operations.
With his career spanning over two decades within the party, Mr. Ishaq has held various key positions that have seen him rise through the ranks, and thus, he appears no stranger to the inner workings of the PNC.
His journey began as a Deputy Constituency Secretary in the Wa Central Constituency, eventually leading to his roles as Regional Secretary for the Upper West Region, National Youth Organiser, and most recently, National Communications Secretary.
Throughout his tenure in these roles, Ishaq's unwavering commitment and sacrifice for the party have been evident, earning him respect and recognition from party members and grassroots supporters alike.
Mr. Ishaq, now aspiring General Secretary of the PNC, confirmed his intention to contest the elections in a press release issued a few hours after picking up the nomination forms.
Reflecting on his decision to contest for the General Secretary position, he emphasized that the decision to contest was not a sudden ambition but rather a project he has nurtured and worked tirelessly towards since joining the PNC in 2002.
"This is not a one-day dream; it is a project I have nurtured and toiled for since I joined the PNC in 2002, working myself through the ranks and dedicating my time, energy, and resources to seeing the party grow and manifest its lofty ideas and ideals as a pioneer of Ghana’s elections since 1992," he stated.
Mr. Ishaq’s deep-rooted passion for the party and his vision for its future have fueled his desire to take on this new challenge, especially at a time when the PNC is seeking to rebuild and strengthen its unity.
Awudu Ishaq's candidacy comes at a critical juncture for the PNC, where the party is recovering from a "bitter factionalism" that threatened its cohesion and, more importantly, as the party prepares for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
He expressed confidence that with his leadership, the PNC can overcome these obstacles and emerge stronger, as he expressed a belief that he has the experience and capability to steer the party towards success.
"I am of the firm and outmost belief and conviction that the party needs tried, tested, and proven brains to lead its charge ahead of the 2024 elections, considering the bitter factionalism that has held it back for the past three years."
"I am never in doubt that I have what it takes to steer the affairs of the party successfully to meet the expectations and aspirations of the grassroots of the party, most of whom have kept faith with me whenever I put myself up for elections in the party," he said.
As the campaign for the General Secretary position kicks off, Mr. Ishaq expresses his commitment to conducting a decorous and vision-driven campaign.
"My supporters and I would commit ourselves to a decent and decorous campaign, one focused on sharing my vision for the party as I seek the mandate of the delegates to be the next General Secretary. We shall abide by the guidelines issued by the party in conducting our campaign, believing that victory is twice assured on August 31, 2024," he said.
The PNC is set to reorganize its internal structures and has announced August 31, 2024, to hold the elections as it readies itself for the December 2024 general elections.
