The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said it is disappointed in the conduct of the leaders of the recent three-day Democracy Hub protests against illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.

According to Tabitha Ayillah, a member of the party’s communications team, lead convener Oliver Barker-Vormawor engaged in conduct unbecoming of a respectable lawyer and leader of a movement.

“I was taken aback by the conduct of some of their leaders during the protest. Even those who followed conducted themselves far better than the leaders,” she said on GHOne TV.

She noted that Barker-Vormawor’s demeanor did not reflect the qualities expected of a freedom fighter, adding that his actions were not conducive to garnering the attention and cooperation of the government.

“You don’t have to shout or create chaos to get the government to listen. We are a listening government,” she said.

She further condemned the destruction of properties, including the defacement of political posters, during the protest, attributing such actions to ulterior political motives.

“We cannot ignore the fact that some have hidden agendas, especially in this political season. If you go out there and destroy a candidate’s pictures, you are indirectly campaigning against that person. Imagine people losing their lives because of this protest. As much as possible, let protests be peaceful,” she stated.
