Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been vindicated yet again, this time by none other than the Executive Director of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Yayra Koku, who has openly admitted that the Ghanacard functions as an e-passport.
In an interview with JoyNews, Koku revealed:
“The Ghanacard has three profiles — e-ID, e-passport, and e-wallet. The e-passport has already been activated, and the next feature we’re rolling out is the e-wallet, which will allow people to load money onto the card and make payments.”

This admission reopens debate on one of the most hotly contested claims of the Bawumia era. Back when the then Vice President insisted that the Ghanacard was an internationally recognised travel document, opposition figures, especially within the NDC, dismissed him as misleading the public. Some MPs even swore it was impossible.
But in 2022, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) confirmed the Ghanacard’s e-passport status, enabling Ghanaians abroad to use it for direct travel into Ghana and within West Africa.
Now, with the NIA boss himself conceding, many Ghanaians on social media say Dr Bawumia has once again been proven right — on an issue that once sparked fierce political ridicule.
