Accra, Aug 9, GNA - A leading member of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Mr Felix Amoah, on Thursday tagged the party "The Sleeping Giant" of the fourth republic democratic dispensation.
He said under the current multi-party democratic regime, the fortunes of the once vibrant force, which liberated Ghana from colonial rule, had dwindled dramatically due to "the blame game politicking".
He blamed leading members of the party for the poor electoral performance over the last decade and said "we either remained passive and did not want to rock the boat or did very little to strengthen the party's electoral machinery."
Mr Amoah, who was a CPP Eastern Regional Chairman, said this at a press conference in Accra to declare support for Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom's (former Minister of Public Sector Reform) in his bid to lead CPP in Election 2008 as its presidential candidate.
Supported by Mr Mike Eghan, former Vice Chairman of the party, Mr Kwame Nkrumah Botio, a youth activist and scores of students from the University of Ghana, Mr Amoah called for an end to the blame game.
"The task of building a political party does not rest on the shoulders of only one person or just a small group of persons...we should all stop the blame game and join the move to re-invent the CPP to make it attractive, credible and competitive."
Mr Amoah called on CPP delegates to the fourth National Delegates Congress slated for September to elect Dr Nduom, the party's Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency as a Flag bearer for Election 2008.
He said Dr Nduom had advanced politically as an assemble member, a Member of Parliament and as a Minister of State for almost seven years.
He said he had worked both for the CPP and the nation and
deserved to serve Ghana as its President in 2009. Mr Eghan said a committee of "Nduom for President" had been
formed to canvas support for the bid to make the CPP a credible
alternative to the National Democratic Congress and the ruling New
Patriotic Party in Elections 2008. "With a common purpose and shared vision we can make this
party new, vibrant and truly great...the CPP in its new form, vibrancy
and with its new organisational effectiveness is indeed the right
alternative and can run this country," Mr Eghan said. He described Dr Nduom as a unifying factor for Elections 2008,
and called on all Nkrumaists to rally behind the candidature of the
