CPP elects national officers on September 10

Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - The Central Committee of Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has finally fixed September 9-10 for its National Delegates Congress to elect National Executive Officers to steer affairs of the party for the next four years. The Central Committee at a meeting last Tuesday, also confirmed the Trade Fair Site in Accra as the venue for the Congress, and validated modalities for the General Secretary, National Chairman and Treasurers report to be presented to congress. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday, a Central Committee Member noted that the Congress would bring together about 2,000 delegates drawn from each of the 230 constituencies. Other delegates are Regional Executives, National Executive Committee, Council of Elders, Founding Members, Member of Parliament, Overseas branches, Youth and Women leagues and representatives from TEWSCHART. Four leading members are contesting for the Chairmanship; Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, MP for Jomoro, Professor Edmund N. Delle, Former Chairman; Mr Ladi Nylander, current Chairman, and Ms Araba Bentsi-Enchill, a Vice Chairman. Six candidates vying for the Vice Chairmanship position are; Ms Rodaline Ayarna; Mr Ibrahim M. Seidu; Mrs Susan Adu Amankwah; Mr William Nana Buckman; Mr Oteng Anane; and Mr Kojo Armah. Three contesting for the General Secretary slot are; Nii Armah Akomfrah; Ivor Kwabena Greenstreet; and Mr Ekow Duncan; whilst Mr Kosi Dedey and Mr Seth Gomnah are contesting for the National Treasurer slot.

Mr Murtala Mohammed, Mr Francis Opai Tetteh, and Mr Issifu Kadiri Abdul Rauf are contesting for the National Youth Organiser slot. Meanwhile, a member of the Central Committee has expressed reservation about attitude of some leading members who have openly declared their support for National Chairmanship contenders. The Central Committee member noted that Professor Agyemang Badu Akosa's support for Ms Nkrumah and Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom's support for Mr Nylander was a potential threat to the stability of the party after congress. He said: 93If any of the two candidates wins the national chairmanship slot, it will be difficult for the other camps who are Flag bearer hopefuls to work confidently with 91an enemy camp' in the general sense".
