Koforidua, Sept. 6, GNA- The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has called on the government to review its educational policy to avert the creation of a class society in the country between the rich and the poor.
The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Dr Abubakari Alhassan, said this when he addressed the Eastern Regional Congress of the party at Koforidua on Friday.
He referred to the "unbridled" cost recovery policy the public universities were introducing which, he noted, were geared towards limiting admissions to only wards from the rich who could pay high fees.
Alhaji Alhassan said the party was going to debate the issue with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the electioneering campaign for the 2004 elections.
He said the CPP has "emerged strongly from the political wilderness and nothing can destroy us", saying it was the only party that commanded a large following from all regions of the country. He asked the new executive to work hard to enable the party to regain its strength and win in the 2004 elections.
The acting regional chairman, Nana Owusu Sekyere narrowly beat the former chairman, Mr S.O. Mpare by 80 votes to 78 to become the new chairman.
Mr Frederick Osei was elected first vice-chairman, while Mr Samuel Kwakye was declared unopposed as second vice-chairman. Mr Kwabena Apea beat Miss Cecilia Teye to retain his post as regional secretary.
Mr Augustine Ackumey and Mr J.T. Mlanor were both returned unopposed as treasurer and party education secretary respectively, while Madam Christina Mills was elected women's organiser. Mr Ebenezer Owusu was elected regional organiser with David Tekper as youth organiser.
