Campaign for district assembly elections heating up in New Juaben

Koforidua, Sept 10, GNA - Vigorous campaign of aspiring contestants in the up-coming district assembly elections is heating up in the New Juaben Municipality though the Electoral Commission (EC) has not opened nominations for the elections.

Posters of candidates, with campaign messages, intending to contest the elections could be seen posted on every available wall and space in various electoral areas.

Some of those candidates are embarking on house - to- house campaign strategies and visiting offices within their electoral areas to solicit the support of voters.

When the GNA, however, contacted the EC to find out if nominations had opened for the elections, the Deputy Eastern Regional Director of the EC, Mr Eric Osei Bonsu, said none of the contestants had filed because nominations were yet to be opened.

He said even though forms for the elections were ready the office was waiting for directives from the headquarters to commence the registration.

Meanwhile, sitting assembly members in the municipality have expressed worry about the campaigns, describing it as dangerous, when nominations had not been filed yet.

Some of the assembly members, who spoke to the GNA, said it was illegal for people to start campaigning when the process of nominations that would scrutinize their backgrounds had not been done.

They have, therefore, called on the EC to condemn the situation to level the ground for all contestants.
