Cape Coast North MP supports Abrofomba Asafo No 5 Company

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ebo Barton Odro on Saturday stressed the need to support Asafo Companies to enable them to perform their roles in the various traditional councils.

He underscored the important role Asafo companies play in the management of the various traditional areas, stressing that; traditional councils cannot effectively operate without the existence of Asafo companies.

Mr Odro, who is also the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North Constituency said this when he donated items worth GHC2,710.00 to the Abrofomba Asafo No.5 Company, based at Russell Street in the Cape Coast South Constituency.

The items, which include 40 bags of cement, two boxes of roofing nails, 14 gallons of assorted paint and sand, is to assist the company to build a new Asafo Post/Shrine.

Asafo companies are traditional warriors, who in the past, went to war on half of their traditional areas, fought fires, organised communal labour and also add colour to traditional festivals through masquerade displays.

The Abrofomba Asafo No.5 Company, which has its motto: “Asafo Kyerem” is among the seven Asafo companies in the Oguaa traditional area.

Mr Odro said the donation was in response to an appeal made by the Asafo No. 5 company to the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills in 2011, when he attended the Oguaa Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast.

He entreated them to endeavour to complete the building of the post before the first anniversary of the death of Prof. Mills, and urged them to keep their environment clean.

The MP called on the members of the company not to allow politics to divide their ranks, but rather they should forge ahead with the development of the area and the company in particular.

Supi Kwamina Sampson, head of the No. 5 Company thanked Mr Odro for the gesture, stating that, though the Abrofomba Asafo No 5 Company was not located in his constituency, he still managed to fulfil the promise and gave the assurance that the items would be used appropriately.

He also appealed to other individuals and organizations to come to their aid.
