The Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has described as a ‘charade’ the public display of emotion by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, during the showing of a documentary on the devastating impacts of illegal mining activities in the country.
Strongly criticising the minister’s actions, Miracles Aboagye asserted that the minister had been misadvised by his team and made a poor decision in attempting to use an emotional appeal through his public display of tears.
According to him, the videos presented by the ministry had been shown on previous occasions, making it difficult for him to understand the rationale behind the minister’s emotional reaction.
“It was a charade, what was done yesterday with the whole video thing and all. We've seen these videos before; these alleged Akonta Mining videos, we've seen them before. What was the crying for? I think that whoever advised the honorable minister to cry misdirected him. I mean, we didn't vote for you to come and cry,” he said in an interview on Channel One TV on April 22, 2025.
The former presidential staffer expressed shock and surprise that someone like Armah-Kofi Buah, who to him, had boldly criticised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his administration during the latter’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), would resort to such a public display of emotion.
He called on the government to take bold and decisive initiatives to address the illegal mining menace, rather than engaging in what he described as public displays that would ultimately yield no meaningful results.
“This is a man that stood in Parliament and told the president in his face that, ‘Mr President, you are everything that good governance is not’ something like that. This is a man that said they had the solution to killing off this galamsey menace. In fact, the cabinet minister, Minister of Communication, said that if Nana Akufo-Addo was serious, he would end galamsey in one week as president and that galamsey shouldn't fester if we have a serious president.
“You are in power and you are given the mandate to stop this and you come and cry. We are crying and you have now come to join us to cry. What do we do? It’s a hopeless situation and I'm very sure last night, he would have regretted making that move,” he added.
During a briefing on April 21, 2025, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, was captured in a viral video shedding tears over the aftermath of mining activities by Akonta Mining Limited.
The caption that accompanied the video shared by GHOne’s X account on April 21, 2025, sought to suggest that he broke down in tears after watching a documentary showing the destruction of lands and water bodies in the Western Region by Akonta Mining Company Limited.
In a rather emotional scene, a man was seen approaching him to briefly console him with a gentle pat on the shoulder.
