Choose candidate who has mass appeal - Club

Tamale, Oct. 3, GNA - The Nana Akuffo-Addo Fan Club of Tamale has said victory for the NPP in the 2008 elections would depend on the choice of the flag-bearer at the December 22 congress of the party. "It will be disastrous to hand over power to the NDC in 2009, that is why we are calling on the delegates to our party's congress to choose a candidate who will be accepted by majority of the electorate", the club said in a statement signed by Akbar Hojatollah Khomeini, President of the Club.

The statement blamed the NDC government for the "chaotic nature" of the economy but for the prudent manner in which the Kufuor administration handled the situation, the economy would have been in shambles.

"The NDC is bent on wresting political power from us at all cost and there is therefore the need for us not to rest on our oars.'' "Whether they will surely succeed or not will depend on the Presidential candidate we will be presenting for the 2008 election," the statement said.

The statement appealed to the delegates to look for a leader who could turn the impressive record of the NPP in government and the overwhelming popularity it was enjoying into votes.

"He has since 2001, been very supportive of President Kufuor's government and has distinguished himself as the most outstanding Minister of State in the history of the country," the statement said. It cautioned the NPP against underrating Professor John Atta Mills and the NDC and appealed to the delegates to go in for Nana Akuffo-Addo to contain the NDC threat.

"We need to understand that 2008 will be the finest elections in the country and Nana Akoffo-Addo is the lifeline of the NPP," it said. 03 Oct 07
