President John Evans Atta Mills on Friday reiterated that the creation of the new 46 municipal and district assemblies was to deepen and accelerate the democratic process to bring governance to the doorsteps of the people.

He said the newly created districts have a unique opportunity to be different in handling settlements and planning and waste management, which had bedeviled the country, given the lessons of the old districts.

These were contained in an address read on his behalf by Dr. Kwasi Apea-Kubi, a Minister of State at the Presidency, when he addressed a durbar on the inauguration of the Kwahu South District Assembly at Tease.

The President said the challenge for the new districts was a peculiar one and urged all stakeholders to join forces with high sense of commitment, responsibility and selfless leadership, to make the decentralization policy meaningful and beneficial.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Mr. Raphael Ahligah, urged the Kwahu North District Assembly to nurture the new district to promote and enhance development in the area.

A 63-year old retired teacher, Mr. Anthony Mensah, was later elected the Presiding Member for the new assembly.**
