DFP debunks purported defection of some members to NPP

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), has debunked claims that some Regional Chairmen of the party had defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A statement signed by Mr Osei Piesie-Anto, National Organiser of the DFP and copied to Ghana News Agency, said those people, who claim to be party leaders are not known and that they were not Regional Chairmen.

It said they should be regarded as impostors and a collection of individuals in Accra, who spoke for themselves and do not represent any structure of the party.

The statement noted that at the said press conference there was not even single constituency executive present, adding that, there is an obvious exposure of falsehood in their claims and speaks volume of the people behind the group and their intentions

It would be recalled that some group of persons, who claim to be leading members of party held a press conference on August 4, to announce that the party will support the NPP in the upcoming general election next year.

It said an erroneous impression had been created in some regions to create a false notion that the DFP had disagreed with the decision of the National Executive Committee, led by Dr Obed Asamoah.

“Individuals may have left, but the DFP as a party, through the various Regional and Constituency Executives, have pledged their total support to the National Executive of the party” he said.

The statement said FEC would continue to respect the right of choice of individuals and associations, as enshrined in the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

“The DFP had never opposed people’s choice of either leaving or joining any particular political party.”

It noted that most of the members of the DFP came from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and naturally majority of the members of the party are fully in support of the leadership to hold talks with the NDC.

It assured the general public of the party’s determination to expose all those who claim to be leading members of the party.

“We are of the strong conviction that Ghana deserves better and we should emphasise more on development-focused politicking”, he said.
