Residents of Peinyina, a settler farming community in the Nkoranza North District have decided not to vote during Election 2012 due to lack of development projects in the community.

They said “we are fed up with vague promises that would not take us anywhere” and advised leaders of political parties not to waste their time to campaign in the area for votes.

Mr. Kwaku Obeng, a former Assemblyman of the area and an elder of the community, told the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza that the people took the decision during a meeting organised by the unit committee, chiefs and elders of the community.

He said the entire community were unhappy with the deplorable state of the 15-kilometre road linking Dromankese to Pienyina and said because of its poor state, drivers had refused to ply it.

Mr. Obeng said the people grow food crops such as maize, yam, rice, cowpea, cassava and vegetables but their efforts were threatened by post-harvest losses especially during the rainy season.

He complained of the lack of potable water as one of the major problems that face them since their only source of water from a stream had been polluted leading to an outbreak of Buruli ulcer.

He said the community had no health facility and the people traveled a distance of about 18 kilometres before accessing health facility at Dromankese or Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Obeng said it was unfortunate that the local primary school had only three classrooms to cater for pupils of it’s six classes.

He said the school also lacked furniture and all efforts by the community leaders and the teachers for furniture from the Nkoranza North District Assembly had proved futile.

Mr. Obeng said they had resolved not to vote during Election 2012 to draw the attention of the Government to their problems and bring some improvement into the lives of the people.

“We are fed up with politics of lies as we only see politicians when they want our votes,” he said.
