Tema, Sep 6, GNA - A Parliamentary Aspirant for the Democratic Freedom Party in the 2008 Elections for Tema East, has appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC), to disqualify aspiring candidates in the upcoming District Assembly Elections, who have posted their posters in their respective electoral areas, even thought the Commission had not opened nominations.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Tema, Mr Stephen Ashitey Adjei said, the behaviour of those aspirants, when the EC had not opened nominations, was a violation of the electoral laws of this country.
Mr Adjei explained that the EC would normally allow aspiring candidates to provide supplementary posters if it found that its common posters were not sufficient for the candidates. In this particular instance, however, he said for not allowing the EC to open nominations, and rushing to post their posters, the aspirants were violating the electoral laws.
Mr Adjei, therefore, urged the EC to take steps to ensure that those aspiring candidates did not breach the rules and regulations of the electoral game, by making them face the full rigours of the law. Citing eye witness accounts as examples, Mr Adjei said his visits to places like Tema New Town, Communities One, Two, Eight and 10 in Tema, Tudu, and Osu in Accra, revealed that the posters of most of the aspirants had been posted throughout their electoral areas. He said since their action was a breach of the electoral laws in the country, the EC should ensure that they were dealt with according to law.
