Dissolve inactive political parties – Damoah

A former director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Kwame Damoah Agyemang has called for the dissolution of registered political parties that have been inactive.

According to the Political Parties Act 2000, a party is required to have branches in all the various regions and, in addition, must be organised in not less than two-thirds of the districts in each region.

Mr Damoah Agyemang added that most of the 24 registered political parties are in clear breach of this Act and must therefore be scrapped in order to save cost.

Speaking in an interview with Class News, he said: “Currently we speak of about 24 registered political parties; are they functional or they are just on paper and are they going to be allowed to contest the election?

“If they are going to contest, it will increase our printing cost. If they (EC) have the regulatory authority and you have parties who do not even satisfy the basic criterion of having offices around the country, they only come into meetings and make noise. It’s just disturbing the atmosphere.

“Let us have a credible list of candidates or registered political parties that we can zoom on and listen to what they are going to tell us in their manifestos but not a multiplicity of parties just walking around and saying things on radio that is a failure in preparation.

“They should immediately enforce the political party’s law, look at those who are not performing properly and start the process of dissolving them.”
