Douglas Egyir to contest Shama constituency seat for NDC

Shama (W/R), Aug. 8, GNA - Mr Douglas Egyir, a development administrator based in La Cote d'Ivoire had been endorsed by popular acclamation as National Democratic Congress' (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Shama in the upcoming general elections.

Mr Yaw Amoako Gyasi of the Electoral Commission, who introduced Mr Egyir to the 160 delegates at their constituency congress at Shama on Saturday, said he was the only candidate who filed his papers at the close of nominations.

Mr Egyir, 44, thanked the delegates for accepting him as their candidate and said he would use his experience, influence and contacts to bring development to his constituency if voted as Member of Parliament.

He said, "after tasting the bitter pills" of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration over the past three years, the people now have the choice to bring back the NDC to power to continue with its good works.

"Many people are fed up with the present Government, and therefore waiting anxiously for the opportunity to bring back the NDC to power. Mr Egyir promised to develop the tourists' potential of Shama, one of the ancient coastal towns that had first contacts with Europeans.

Mr Robert Monney, Assistant Western Regional Secretary of the party said campaign messages of the elections would focus on issues and not personal attacks.

The people, he said, are witnesses to the prevailing hardships that had "so badly affected their lives", and urged the electorate not to give their mandate to the NPP.

Nana Kobina Esilfie, NDC Shama constituency vice chairman urged supporters and sympathizers of the party to ignore the "scheming of hypocrites", who have left to join other political parties for their selfish ends and remain loyal to the NDC.

Mr Hameed Williams, Effia-Kwesimintsim NDC constituency organiser said so far, the Kufuor administration had not been able to fulfil any of its promises to the electorate.

He called on party activists to conduct their operations in a manner that would further enhance the image of the party to brighten its chances in the December 2004 elections.

Mr Collins Esilfie, an executive member of the US branch of the NDC said Professor John Evans Atta Mills, NDC presidential candidate is a visionary and scholar who is capable of leading the country out of her economic woes.
