Obuasi, March 24, GNA - More than 85,000 out of the estimated 104,000 eligible voters in the Obuasi municipality have been registered within one week of the voters' registration exercise.
The figure represented 88.4 per cent.
Mr Francis Addai-Boateng, the Obuasi Municipal Electoral Officer, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Obuasi on Wednesday, said registration in the New Adansi North district was also very encouraging.
Mr Addai-Boateng, who is also responsible for the new district, said so far, 23,000 out of 27,353 voters in the Adansi-Asokwa constituency and 16,000 out of 18,573 estimated voters in the Fomena constituency had registered.
According to the electoral officer, no major problems have been experienced as at now apart from the initial one concerning more than one party agent at the registration centres.
"Now the situation has improved as the EC is now enjoying the co-operation of all the political parties", he said.
Mr Addai-Boateng indicated that so far no problem of materials shortage had been experienced.
The Electoral Officer, who was enthusiastic about the way the people of Adansi have comported themselves within the first week of the exercise, commended the local FM station, Shaft Radio for the awareness they have created.
On frauds, Mr Addai-Boateng said much have not been recorded except that there were instances of minors registering but their cards had been withdrawn.
Mr Addai-Boateng further said only four people's registration had been challenged on the basis of nationality and that, the cases would be adjudicated by the District Registration Review Committee (DRRC). He was hopeful that the peaceful atmosphere that had prevailed in the municipality and that of Adansi North would be maintained throughout the exercise.
"The EC is grateful to the people of Adansi for an incident-free registration exercise, at least as at now".
Mr Addai-Boateng said the photo exercise would reach Ashanti Region from April 24 to May 1, and urged those who have registered to embrace the exercise with the same enthusiasm with which they registered.
