‘Eii Abi!’ – How NDC supporter shocked Mahama with a ‘side chick’ comment

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) member left the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, John Dramani Mahama, confused with a passing comment while he was delivering a speech to the ‘Professionals Forum,’ a professional wing of the party, on Monday, August 26, 2024.

Mahama, who was encouraging the professionals to be party agents in the upcoming 2024 elections, emphasised that election procedures have changed over time.

He stressed the need for professionals to be at the center of party affairs to support the election process.

He called on them to be agents in their respective constituencies and voting centers through their leadership. While speaking, Mahama urged them to sacrifice for at least 48 hours during the election period for the victory of the party. He suggested that after voting, they should stay at the voting center and have their wives bring them food.

“I want to also thank those who have offered to be polling agents and take part in the training. You can’t just say you want to be a party agent and on that day just go and sit there.

"Elections are now more complex than they used to be. You need to understand what to look out for, to ensure that everybody goes through the biometric verification device and the filling of the pink sheet and all that.

“We need people who can understand the current electoral process, and that is why we need more of you to be part of it.

"For those who have not yet volunteered, some people did proxy to be able to go to where we need them, but if you didn’t do a proxy, you can still, through your leadership, identify the polling station where you are and go through the training in your own polling station,” he said.

He was interrupted by a comment from one of the sympathizers, who added that side chicks could also support such individuals in their feeding. Visibly confused, Mahama shouted the name of the person who made the comment, paused for a while, and said that he would let the comment pass because it had become a reality of life.

“So that you won’t go and then go home. You will vote and sit there. Let your wife or husband bring you your food there.

"You will eat… or your side chick, eii Abi! Okay, it is the reality of life, so I will let that pass. Let them bring you food there, sit there until the counting, and make sure that every ‘I’ is dotted and every ‘T’ is crossed. Make sure you get the pink sheet and hand it over to the appropriate person to send to the collation centers.”
