The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming 2024 general election.
This endorsement follows the disqualification of GFP’s presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, by the Electoral Commission (EC) on November 12 due to irregularities in his nomination forms.
This disqualification came after the sudden death of the GFP’s initially approved candidate, Akua Donkor, in November.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Jerry Addo, the Deputy General Secretary of the GFP, announced the party's decision to support the NDC after extensive consultations with its executives.
Addo highlighted the NDC’s policies, such as the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank and the abolition of academic fees for first-year tertiary students, as key reasons for their endorsement.
“The Ghana Freedom Party is supporting the candidature of H.E John Dramani Mahama on Saturday, December 7. He’s going to capture power to save Ghanaians. And I want to state here, it’s a fact, nobody has coerced us, nobody has influenced us into arriving at this decision,” Addo stated.
He further explained that the GFP carefully examined the manifestoes and policies of various political parties and independent candidates before making their decision.
“We critically examined the manifestoes and policies of the various political parties and even the independent candidates. That is why we have arrived at this decision very late. Because we just have from today, Wednesday, up to Saturday. It was not easy; we did extensive consultation. And you see, our mother, the [late] flagbearer, had women at heart.
Addo emphasised that the late flagbearer, Akua Donkor, had a strong focus on women's issues, aligning with the NDC’s campaign policy of establishing the Women’s Development Bank.
Additionally, the NDC’s promise of free tertiary education for first-year students and support for the physically challenged resonated with the GFP’s vision.
“And NDC has a campaign policy of establishing the Women’s Development Bank; it was one thing that was vital to our mother. It was crucial to her; why won’t we go that line? Our mother didn’t have formal education, and the NDC is promising free tertiary education for first-year students and also the physically challenged. It’s a policy our mother wanted. The policies and vision of the NDC are in line with the Ghana Freedom Party,” he added.
This comes barely hours before the country goes to the polls on December 7, 2024.
