Madam Eunice Korlekuor, the Eastern Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Blind Union (GBU), has expressed relief at her and her colleagues' ability to independently exercise their franchise without the support of others.
In an interview after casting her vote at Odumase-Krobo in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, she shared her satisfaction with the ability of the visually impaired to vote independently. In the past, trusted persons who assisted them often abused their trust by voting for candidates other than their preferred choices.
"My experience is that no one is helping me to influence me about whom I should vote for," she said. "I had the person whom I wanted to vote for in my mind, so immediately I had the jacket, I went to the screen and chose the one I wanted to vote for."
She also mentioned that she had not received news of any major challenges confronting any member of the union in any part of the region. Visually impaired persons across the country underwent training on the use of tactile jackets ahead of the elections. The jacket is a voting aid provided by the EC to help the visually impaired cast their votes independently.
However, Madam Eunice Korlekuor bemoaned the transportation challenges faced by visually impaired persons in reaching their respective voting centres and appealed to the parliamentary candidates to facilitate transportation to the polling centres.
