Ashaiman (G/A), Aug. 27, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) said it would ensure that basic education in the country really became free under the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE). Dr. J. Tony Aidoo, Member of the National Executive Committee of the Party, who was speaking at an NDC forum at Ashaiman on Thursday to educate party activists on the NDC manifesto, said NDC Government would provide free uniforms, textbooks and exercise books and meals during school hours to facilitate teaching and learning.

He accused the Government of misapplying the Ghana education Trust Fund (GETFund) and said the NDC would use it judiciously by funding all projects required for the success of the FCUBE in fulfilment of NDC's social democratic objectives.

Dr Aidoo said the NDC Manifesto stressed on education to ensure that children were offered basic education to eliminate illiteracy from the country.

Dr Aidoo said an NDC Government would do away with the archaic theory of "it is not the business of Government to do business" and work hard to enhance economic development.

He explained that the private sector could not invest in certain sectors of the economy, and Government should, therefore, be involve in those sectors.

Dr Aidoo said the Government was obliged to constructs roads and provide other infrastructure facilities and then the private sector could be requested to operate more efficiently in these sectors to rake in more revenue for the development of the country.

He said the Government of Japan established various electrical and automobile companies like Sony, Sanyo, Mitsubishi, Madza and Nissan and allowed the private sector to run them, adding, there should be state-sponsored companies.

Dr Aidoo said the NDC Manifesto aimed at changing the structure of the economy to ensure that the neo-colonialist economy was done away with.

He called on Parliament to ensure that the Capital Ventures Fund being established by the Ministry of Finance with funding from taxes was not managed by the Minister to ensure transparency.

Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ashaiman, said an NDC Government would be re-born to offer qualitative changes adding: "That is why we want to educate ourselves on the NDC manifesto, so that we can explain issues to others". 27 Aug. 04
