First woman candidate of Akwatia sure of victory

An Akwatia business woman who won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary last Saturday, said she was hopeful of recapturing the Akwatia parliamentary seat in 2016 which the party lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2012.

Madam Mercy Adu-Gyemfi, popularly known as Ama Cey, believed to be the bank roller of the NPP in the constituency, is the first woman to contest the primaries of any political party in the constituency and winning.

Madam Adu-Gyemfi won 311 votes to beat the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Kofi Asare who won 35 votes, while Mr Philip Kofi Owusu-Ankomah, an electrical consultant, who had contested four primaries of the party and lost all, managed to secure 183 votes.

Speaking to the cheering supporters who called at her residence at Akwatia to congratulate her on her victory, Madam Adu-Gyemfi said, she could see victory in sight, but noted that it could not be achieved on a silver platter, but sound strategy and organization.

She urged members of the party to close their ranks and unite as never before, adding,”the seat is within our grasp, if we unite as members of the great elephant family and prosecute our common agenda of winning back our lost seat.”

Madam Adu-Gyemfi urged the two men who challenged her in the primaries to join her in the forward march to victory in 2016.

At the primary, there was wild celebration even before the final counting of the ballots and the police had a tough time clearing the way for the winner to enter her opened car all the way from Apinamang to Akwatia.

At Akwatia, Madam Adu-Gyemfi was welcomed by thousands of supporters and sympathizers on both sides of the road.
