Fomena, (Ash), Jan. 23, GNA - Voting got underway smoothly in the Fomena constituency by-election and some 19,409 registered voters are expected to cast their votes at 45 polling centres.
Three candidates are vying for the parliamentary seat that became vacant following the death of Mr Akwasi Afrifa, the former MP. They are Nana Abu Bonsra, an architect who is contesting standing on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, Madam Grace Ampofo, a retired teacher for the National Democratic Congress and Madam Augustina Kyei for the Democratic People's Party.
A visit to some of the polling centres by the Ghana News Agency in the morning indicated that voting was going on smoothly although there were no long queues.
At the Kwapia polling centre, 206 people out of 938 had cast their votes as at 1000 hours, 224 out of 805 people had exercised their franchise at Patakro at the same time.
At Akrokeri chief's palace polling centre, 160 out of 674 people had cast their votes while 148 people had cast their votes at the Methodist Primary School.
Some 148 people had cast their votes at the Akrokeri JSS with 104 casting their votes at the zongo.
At Old Edubiase, 134 people out of 500 had cast their votes. They included a 95-year-old, Opanin Kwabena Oduro and Opanin Osei Yaw, 90 years.
At Dompoase L/A Primary Number Two polling station, 138 people had cast their votes, including an 80-year-old Madam Akua Ataa. Mrs Theresa Opoku, the Presiding Officer, told the GNA that the station was short of 13 ballot papers. She said 437 people were expected to vote but 424 ballot papers were received.
At the Kyekyewere polling station 134 out of 589 people had cast their votes as at 9am.
Kyekyewere and Dadwan are two polling centres where the NDC is contesting their inclusion in the Fomena constituency. The NDC said the two areas had FO3 code number that indicated that they belong to the Obuasi constituency.
Speaking to the GNA at Fomena, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National Organiser of the NDC, said the party recognised only 43 polling centres. He said the two polling centres had not been approved by parliament as part of the Fomena constituency even though they had been added to the Adansi North District and as such the party would not be part of illegality.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the EC did not have a register for the two areas and the EC did not also print ballot papers for the two centres. He said the EC, upon request, submitted the register of the constituency that had FO2 as its code number and that excluded the two polling centres.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the NDC, therefore, did not see why the two polling stations should be created overnight. "The party is not taking part in the by-election in the two polling centres." 23 Jan 07
